Mission Statement

Department of Curriculum and Instruction

The mission of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction is to advance knowledge and the practice of teaching and learning. We address the educational needs of a rapidly changing global society in democratic and socially just ways.  Our teaching and research are rooted in a variety of academic disciplines. We value innovation and build upon the strengths of cultural and linguistic diversity.  In pursuing our mission we are:

Centered on Research

Our faculty and students inquire into significant questions in curriculum and instruction employing a variety of research traditions. We direct major research initiatives, lead nationally recognized centers and engage in ground-breaking, cross-disciplinary research that advances, both nationally and globally, the relationships among theory, practice and educational policy.

Grounded in Practice

We work in real-world settings to develop theory that impacts people’s lived experience of education. Our faculty and students cultivate relationships with local schools and communities, educational agencies and other universities in preparing teachers, conducting research, and sharing expertise to address the complex challenges of an increasingly diverse and technological society.

Focused on Students

Our teacher preparation programs carefully mentor and support students, both on campus and in their field experiences. Our master’s programs provide a wide variety of pathways and environments for educators to improve their practice and leadership skills. Students in our doctoral programs engage in innovative research on critical issues in education and work closely and collaboratively with faculty throughout their programs of study.

In accordance with the mission of the College of Education, our department seeks to welcome and support all students, including undocumented students, so they can thrive academically and professionally within the field of education.
