Earn a Master’s Degree in Teacher Leadership, Mentoring & Professional Development

We are accepting applications for a Master’s Program in Curriculum & Instruction with a special focus on Teacher Mentoring, School Leadership & Professional Development.

This program has been designed for elementary teachers (grades 1 through 5) currently teaching in Austin and the surrounding areas.

Teachers participating in this program will work directly with preservice teachers enrolled in the preservice teacher preparation program at The University of Texas with a specialization in Literacy. The program of study will include a set of required courses in Language and Literacy Studies as well as an opportunity for a focus in such areas as: Mathematics and Science Education; Social Studies Education; Cultural Studies; Early Childhood Education; Technology; Bilingual/Bicultural Education; English as a Second Language; or additional work in Language and Literacy Studies.

The short-term goals for the program relate to the development of mentoring and support skills for work with preservice teachers. The long-term goals are directed toward a career path that involves mentoring and leadership roles in professional development at the school and district levels. We also envision this cohort of Master Mentor Teachers working in a continuing relationship with the teacher preparation program at The University of Texas.

We are seeking outstanding classroom teachers who meet the following criteria:

  • A commitment to improving classroom practices.
  • Currently teaching in Grades 1 through 5 at an elementary school with the intention of continuing to teach in one of these grades for the 2017-2018 academic year.
  • A minimum of three years classroom teaching experience (by the end of the 2016-2017 academic year).
  • A strong commitment to the development of mentoring skills.
  • A commitment to work with an intern/student teacher during the 2017-2018 academic year.
  • Support of your school principal for your participation in the program.

For admission purposes, we will prioritize applications from teachers who have participated in the UT Coaching with CARE Professional Development program.

Financial Support

There is limited space in this program. Applications will be considered competitively. We will offer $5,000 in tuition support for all students admitted to the program. While this amount will not cover the entire cost of completing the program, the support is substantial.
