Education Ceremony Information
This ceremony is only for undergraduate students earning a Bachelor's degree or completing a Post-Baccalaureate teacher certification program. Graduate students should contact the Graduate School for information about graduate student convocation.
Education Commencement Speaker
We are pleased to announce that Dr. Paul Cruz will be our Fall 2016 Commencement Speaker. Dr. Cruz is the superintendent of the Austin Independent School District, serving 84,000 students and 12,000 employees. Dr. Cruz guides the district in realizing the vision to reinvent the urban school experience.
Dr. Cruz began his career in education in 1987. He worked as a teacher, campus administrator, central office administrator and superintendent in Corpus Christi, San Antonio and south Texas. He also served as the deputy commissioner for dropout prevention at the Texas Education Agency. He currently serves as a board member for the Austin Area Research Organization, Austin Ed Fund and Austin Partners in Education.
Having set a personal goal to earn a doctorate before he turned 30 years old, Dr. Cruz received his Ph.D. in educational leadership from the University of Texas at Austin at the age of 29. In his doctoral program, Dr. Cruz was a fellow in the Cooperative Superintendency Program, which is designed to prepare future urban school superintendents.
He received a Bachelor of Science degree in education from UT-Austin, with a specialization in English, and a Master of Science degree in educational administration from Corpus Christi State University.
Dr. Cruz and his wife, Diana, have four children: Maricristina, Selly, Paul, and Manny
Parking for Commencement activities is free in designated areas on a first-come, first served basis. Convenient free parking will be available in the San Jacinto Garage off San Jacinto Street or Manor Garage located at the corner of Robert Dedman Drive & Clyde Littlefield. Disabled parking is available on the west side of Robert Dedman Drive, just north of 23rd Street. Additional parking information is available at the Parking and Transportation Web Site.
Degree candidates participating in the College of Education Commencement Ceremony will wear academic regalia. Academic regalia and invitations are available for purchase from the University Co-op. The tassel and stole color for the College of Education is light blue.
Special Assistance for Graduates & Guests
The Bass Concert Hall staff is prepared to make accommodations for all graduates and/or guests needing special assistance. Special seating has been designated for guests in need of assistance.
