Early Childhood to Sixth Grade Bilingual Generalist (BIL) leads to Texas certification to teach in a bilingual or general elementary classroom. Bilingual education is a dual-language program designed to provide equal educational opportunities to elementary students of limited English proficiency. The bilingual program at UT is specifically focused on educational issues that relate to students whose first language is Spanish, for this reason, fluency in Spanish is required.
Students must apply for admission to the Professional Development Sequence (PDS) by March 1 to enter in the fall semester, or by October 1 to enter in the spring semester. Admission requirements include presentation of a minimum 2.5 GPA on all coursework taken at UT Austin, completion of prerequisite coursework with a minimum grade of “C” or above (M 316K and all major coursework, including the Foundations Semester), completed application by the stated deadlines, and selection by an Admissions Committee. At the time of entrance into the PDS, students may only be lacking up to a maximum of three semester hours of coursework outside of the professional development sequence courses.
The first and second year course listings in these documents are to be used as guides to assist you with selecting a schedule, and should be used with the degree plan. These courses can be taken during the fall, spring, or summer terms. A course load of twelve to fifteen semester hours is recommended during the fall and spring semesters.
Students entering UT Fall 2012 should NOT have more than three semester hours remaining prior to starting the Professional Development Sequence (PDS). Students pursuing the Early Childhood - 6th Grade Bilingual Certification major typically begin the PDS the second semester of the third year. You are encouraged to consult with your academic advisor when finalizing your schedule each semester.
