HDCLS Master's Required Courses

Each area concentration within the HDCLS Master's program has different required coursework. Below are current examples of coursework for each concentration, but please note curriculum is estimated and subject to change.

  • Required Courses - College Teaching Concentration

    College Teaching Specialization

    MEd (Master’s in Education)

    A. Foundation courses: 21 hours

    • EDP 380E Fundamental Statistics OR
      EDP 371 Introduction to Statistics
    • EDP 380P Measurement & Evaluation
    • EDP 381M Seminar in Social Psychology
    • EDP 382L Instructional Psychology
    • EDP 382L Motivation and Emotion
    • EDP 385 Individual through the Life Cycle
    • EDP 398T College Teaching Methodology

    B. Elective: 3 hours. Choose one from among the following:

    • EDP 382L Psychology of Learning
    • EDP 382L Psychology of Computers in Education
    • EDP 381M Individual in Society
    • EDP 382L Psychology of College Student Learning/Retention
    • EDP 386M Mindfulness, Compassion, and the Self
    • EDP ___ Multicultural Issues in Schooling (to be developed)

    C. Out-of-department courses: 6 hours. Out-of-department courses are chosen to reflect discipline need. Some possible choices might be courses in technology or community college systems. Courses to be approved by Area Chair. One course must be a non-EDP course.

    D. Internship in Teaching:  6 hours. The internship will pair the student with a faculty mentor teaching a course that the student is likely to be teaching after he or she graduates.  The student will shadow the instructor as he/she organizes and conducts the class and will discuss the various components and decisions made in the course as a way of understanding the thinking and decision-making required. The student is not allowed to be responsible for typical TA activities, but rather to “study” the course as a phenomenon, as a way to develop a portfolio, report, or thesis. Requires 2 semesters of registration in EDP 394K Internship in Teaching.

    MA (Master of Arts)

    A. All courses required for the MEd

    B. Two additional courses (6-7 hours)

    • EDP 382K Correlation & Regression AND
    • EDP 482K Experimental Design & Statistical Inference, OR
      EDP 384 Research Design & Methods for Psychology & Education (or approved substitute)

    Options

    Portfolio: 3 additional hours. The MEd and MA degrees can be earned with a portfolio, which involves registration in EDP 395 Research. Students will produce a portfolio under faculty supervision and graduate with no report/thesis.

    Report: 3 additional hours. The MEd and MA degrees can be earned with a report, which involves registration in EDP 398R Master’s Report.

    Thesis: 6 additional hours. The MA degree can be earned with a thesis, which involves collecting and analyzing data, and registration in two semesters of EDP 698A and 698B Master’s Thesis. These courses count as 3 hours each.

    C. Supporting Work (Out-of-department/area courses): 6 hours. Students must take 2 courses outside the HDCLS area, and at least one must be out-of-department (non-EDP).

    MA (Master of Arts)
