Individual Differences – ALD 322

Introduction to individual differences between people throughout the lifespan. This course examines exceptions to the typical development context of students. You will study current research trends, theoretical and legal considerations related to disabilities, and issues of family participation in schools and education. You will gain a unique educational perspective to linguistic diversity in special education classrooms, as well as an orientation to assistive technology.

This course fulfills a global cultural flag requirement.

Prerequisites: Three semester hours of coursework in psychology.

Instructor: Brenda L Zaparolli

Brenda Zaparolli is a doctoral graduate from the Learning Disabilities and Behavior Disorders program at The University of Texas at Austin, Brenda also completed her master’s degree in Special Education at UT Austin. Her experience includes working in special education in the public school system. She has also worked on federally funded research projects in special education and provides consulting services on various projects. Her research interest includes academic interventions for (1) students with and at risk for learning disabilities (2) cultural and linguistically diverse populations experiencing learning disabilities.

“The purpose of this class is to learn, discuss, and evaluate topics related to disability. Students will increase their knowledge about and sensitivity toward persons with disabilities. In addition, this course is designed to discuss issues related to cultural and linguistically diverse individuals. Cultural and linguistic competency ensures the proper use of culturally responsive teaching, improves cross-cultural communication skills, promotes more efficient parent/student-teacher relationships, and overall increases sociocultural awareness. This course will prepare you to connect with Spanish-speaking students with disabilities, their families and communities.” says Zaparolli.

Autism Spectrum Disorders: Perceptions And Realities – SED 378T

Familiarize yourself with the approaches and strategies that improve the lives of people with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and their families. You will use research to examine the beliefs and conceptions of ASD in Spanish-speaking communities. Explore how ASD is experienced in various Speaking-speaking countries and how to best translate the results of research into everyday language and practice.
