The Department of Special Education is hosting the 2nd annual Supporting Individuals with Autism conference, highlighting both academic and personal perspectives of autism. Attendees will attend presentations on cutting edge research followed by a panel discussion on getting to know the personal side of autism. The conference will conclude with a keynote talk from Dr. Fred Volkmar, a world-renowned researcher on the topic of autism spectrum disorders, followed by a reception.
There is no cost associated with attending this conference.

Session I: Morning Research Symposium (2BCBA CEUs)
Current autism research in the central Texas area will be showcased from the following universities:
- Baylor: "The Use of Demand Assessments in the Assessment and Treatment of Challenging Behavior"
- Texas State – CARES clinic: "Teaching Children with Autism to Respond to Disguised Mands and Body Language Cues"
- The University of Texas at San Antonio: "Preliminary Effects of a Brief Telehealth Intervention for Adolescents and Adults with Autism"
- The University of Texas at Austin: An Evaluation of Lag Schedules as a Treatment for Play-Based Stereotypy"
Session II: Adults with Autism Panel (1BCBA CEU)
Come hear two adults with autism give their perspectives on what autism is like "practically" (affecting day to day living) and the implications on how services for individuals with autism should be tailored and individualized.
Session III: Keynote Talk with Dr. Fred R. Volkmar, M.D.
"The Changing Face of Autism: A Developmental Perspective"
Important changes have emerged over the last several decades in the long-term outcome of autism with more adults able to achieve personal independence and self-sufficiency. This change has led to more opportunities for adolescents and adults but also has underscored some of the challenges they and their families face. This presentation will review factors that have contributed to improved outcome including earlier diagnosis and improved intervention. Changes in outcome in relation to individual characteristics, models of intervention, and other variables will be summarized. Issues of co-morbidity, challenges for service provision, and new models of support for adolescents and adults will be discussed. Implications of research findings for treatment as well as gaps in our knowledge will be identified. Finally, opportunities and challenges for future work will be summarized.
Fred R. Volkmar, M.D. is the Irving B. Harris Professor of Child Psychiatry, Pediatrics, and Psychology at the Yale University Child Study Center, School of Medicine. Dr. Volkmar was the primary author of the American Psychiatric Association’s DSM-IV autism and pervasive developmental disorders section. He is the author of several hundred scientific papers and chapters as well as a number of books including the Handbook of Autism (Wiley Publishing), and a Practical Guide to Autism: What Every Parent, Teacher and Family Members Needs to know (Wiley Publishing). He has served as co-chairperson of the autism/intellectual disabilities committee of the American Academy of the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and is the current Editor of the Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders.
