History at ESPN
As Senior Director of Event Operations, Swanson managed one of ESPNs most valued properties, the X Games. Swanson helped grow the X Games from its inception into a global brand. Today, the X Games is televised in more than 215 countries, to fans in 439 million homes. Over 4.8 million spectators have attended the live event.
Most recently in 2014, Swanson oversaw the launch of X Games Austin. Swanson handled relocating the event from Los Angeles, CA to the new host city. Swanson served as point person to cultivate and steward a positive working relationship with city officials while delivering on all essential event requirements.
In 2010, as Senior Director of Content Strategy, Swanson was lead team member in devising the business strategy for the global expansion of the X Games. Swansons group established the host city bid process and was responsible for ensuring quality control and consistency across all events. In 2013 the group delivered six highly acclaimed X Games events worldwide. New host cities: Munich Germany; Barcelona, Spain; and Foz do Iguacu, Brazil; joined existing X Games events in Aspen, CO; Los Angeles, CA; and Tignes, France.
Prior to 2010, Swanson served as Director of Event Operations. Swanson was in charge of developing comprehensive X Games event management plans for all domestic and international events. Venues evolved from temporary sites to world class venues. Under Swansons leadership, the event operations staff focused on team work, innovation, and creativity that resulted in highly rated and successful events. The X Games is the recipient of multiple Sports Emmy Awards, Sports Travel Awards, and International Special Events Societys Gala Awards.
Swanson managed the distinguished ESPY Awards Red Carpet in Los Angeles for twelve years, in addition to his X Games responsibilities.
Swanson joined ESPN in 1995, the first year of the X Games, formerly the Extreme Games, held in Providence, R.I.
Prior to joining ESPN
From 1993-1995, Swanson served as Assistant Professor at Johnson & Wales University. Prior to Johnson & Wales, Swanson worked for the town of East Greenwich, Rhode Island as Director of Recreation and coached varsity high school and college football.
Swanson completed his Master of Education degree with a concentration in recreation & leisure services from Springfield College and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration with a concentration in marketing from Western New England College.
