ELP Associate Professor and Students Participate in Summer Lecture Series in Brazil

June 11, 2018

Educational Leadership and Policy Associate Professor Patricia Somers is a guest lecturer in a summer lecture series at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul in Porto Alegre (PUCRS) in Brazil this summer. Somers is on a Fulbright Research Fellowship in Brazil, accompanied by three UT students: PHEL doctoral students Rebecca Gavillet and Jennifer Zamora, and intern Cory Nunn (B.S., 2019) who will enter medical school in August. Based at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul in Porto Alegre, the group is collaborating with Professor Marilia Morosini (a former Teresa Lozano Long Institute of Latin American Studies postdoctoral fellow) and Professor Bettina Steren Santos (a former UT/Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel postdoctoral fellow).

The group is presenting a series of lectures on affirmative action policy in Brazil, as well as lectures in Portuguese on topics that contrast college student persistence and outcomes in Brazil, Colombia, and the United States. Topics include the impact of racism and sexism on male and female educational outcomes, experiential international mobility programs for graduate students, violence in education, able-ism in higher education programs, and ways to encourage diverse groups of students to learn from each other.

These representatives of the College of Education will present at an International Congress on Educational Policy in June.
