Joanna is deeply passionate about the relationship of social studies teaching and social justice. Informed and inspired by her time as a high school U.S. history teacher in Buffalo, NY, she is interested in how critical, historiography-driven pedagogy can be delivered via multimodal counter-stories that are centered on students' lives. Her work asks how this kind of teaching and learning can strengthen content connection in the classroom, as well as students' historical thinking, agency and growth. Her research seeks deeper understandings of how a critical U.S. history curriculum supported by the humanities can foster equity in education, especially concerning race, gender and sexuality.
