Nathaly S Batista-Morales

Nathaly is a Puerto Rican doctoral candidate in the Bilingual and Bicultural Education Program in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. Growing up both the island and the mainland, shaped her bilingual and bicultural identity.

Her research focuses on the preparation of Latinx teachers across contexts for decolonial methodologies and critical literacies. She teaches Bilingual Reading Methods, Reading Assessment and Development, ESL Methods and Foundations of Bilingual Education.

For at least two and half years, she worked with both interns and Student Teachers in the field overseeing their practical experiences. As a facilitator she focused on developing authentic, reciprocal and caring relationships that allowed for risk taking and mentoring around issues of race, class and gender inequities in classrooms.

Mentoring undergraduate Latinas who wish to enter graduate school has also become part of her experience here at UT. The Intellectual Entrepreneurship Pre-Grad Internship program has made this work possible over the last two years.
