The Professional Development Sequence for Future Teachers

The Professional Development Sequence (PDS) is a teacher preparation program that consists of coursework, field experiences and observations, and culminates with student teaching. The PDS length and requirements vary by teacher certification, and the PDS is an additional requirement to your major. Upon successful completion of the PDS, you will be recommended for certification to teach in Texas.

Apply to the PDS

You must apply during the long semester prior to entering the program. Admission to the PDS is dependent upon meeting the required GPA and successful completion of prerequisite coursework. All students entering the PDS must also have access to a laptop.

College of Education Teacher Certification Programs

Early Childhood-6th Core Subjects/Generalist, English as a Second Language

The EC - 6 ESL Core Subjects/Generalist program is designed for students seeking Texas certification to teach in elementary school classrooms, with a focus on learning theory, elementary school content, ESL, and teaching methods.

Degree Plans: 2018-2020, 2016-2018, 2014-2016, 2012-2014

Length: 3 semesters (Intern I, Intern II, Student Teacher)

Starts: Summer, Fall, and Spring

PDS Application Periods: February 1 to March 1 (Summer and Fall) or September 1 to October 1 (Spring)

PDS Admission Requirements

  • A completed application by the stated deadlines,
  • minimum 2.5 GPA in the last 60 hours taken,
  • completion of prerequisite coursework (M 316K and all major coursework on the degree plan with a minimum grade of "C" or above), and
  • selection by an Admissions Committee.

If you already have completed a bachelor’s degree, you can become a certified teacher through our traditional EC-6 Core Subjects/Generalist program as a non-degree seeker.

Early Childhood-6th Core Subjects/Generalist, Bilingual Education

The EC - 6th grade Core Subjects/Generalist, Bilingual Education Teacher Certificate Program is designed for students seeking Texas certification to teach in a general elementary classroom or a bilingual classroom. This program focuses on teaching Spanish speaking children, and fluency in Spanish is required.

Degree Plans: 2018-2020, 2016-2018, 2014-2016, 2012-2014

Length: 3 semesters (Intern I, Intern II, Student Teacher)

Starts: Spring only

Special Education (Undergraduate, High Incidence Disabilities Master’s)

Undergraduate Program

The All-Level (Early Childhood-12th grade) Special Education Teacher Certification Program (SED) is designed to prepare prospective educators to teach in a variety of settings. Teachers learn to educate individuals with disabilities including children and youth with mild to moderate disabilities, as well those with severe and/or multiple disabilities.

The Special Education PDS only begins in a fall semester and lasts four semesters. PDS admission requirements include:

If you already have completed a bachelor’s degree, you can become a certified teacher through our traditional All Level Special Education program as a non-degree seeker.

High Incidence Disabilities Master's Degree with All-Level Special Education Teacher Certification

A master's degree with teacher certification in Special Education is offered through the Department of Special Education.

Length: 4 semesters; Students must first be accepted into the graduate program in the Department of Special Education.

Physical Education

Undergraduate Options

While students could major in any Kinesiology and Health Education program, the Applied Movement Science program provides the best fit for preparing students for positions as physical education teachers at the elementary, middle, and secondary school levels.

The Youth and Community Studies major provides another route for students to become certified all-level physical education teachers.

PDS Application Period: September 1 to October 1, February 1 to March 1

Program Requirements

  • Current students must have a minimum UT GPA of 2.0 to enter the major, but a 2.5 GPA in the last 60 hours to enter the PDS,
  • Students must take KIN 352K Sport Pedagogy before applying to the PDS, and
  • selection by an Admissions Committee.

Foreign Language Requirement

Students majoring in Applied Movement Science are only required to complete a foreign language requirement if they do not have two or more years of foreign language in high school. Students without two years of high school foreign language coursework must earn credit for the second college-level course in a foreign language; this credit does not count towards the degree.

Students majoring in Youth and Community Studies may choose one of three options to fulfill the foreign language requirement:

  • Complete second semester proficiency at the college level in any language other than English,
  • Take an exam to reach second semester proficiency in any language other than English, or
  • Complete three of the foreign language substitution courses.

If you already have completed a bachelor’s degree, you can become a certified teacher through our traditional Youth and Community Studies or Applied Movement Science teacher certification routes for non-degree seekers.

Master of Education plus All-Level Physical Education Teacher Certification

You can obtain Early Childhood-12th grade physical education teaching certification as part of the master's degree (M.Ed.). This program is designed for students with a bachelor’s degree in areas other than physical education teacher education.

University of Texas Urban Teachers (Bachelor, Master Degrees in English, Social Studies)

English Undergraduate

Secondary English teacher certification is now offered through the University of Texas Urban Teachers (UTUT) Program in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. English teacher candidates will develop the knowledge, skills, and dispositions to support teaching and learning in linguistically and culturally diverse urban settings.

Program: Required Courses

Length: 3 semesters (Intern I, Intern II, Student Teacher)

Starts: Students enter the summer before their senior year

PDS Application Period: January 15 to February 15

Master of Education Degree Program with Secondary English Teacher Certification

This degree is tailored for students holding a bachelor’s degree in English or other Humanities disciplines and seeking secondary English teacher certification. English teacher candidates will develop the knowledge, skills, and dispositions to support teaching and learning in linguistically and culturally diverse urban settings.

Length: 3 semesters (Intern I, Intern II, Student Teacher)

Only one additional semester of coursework is required to complete the master's degree after completing the PDS.

Social Studies Undergraduate

Social studies teacher candidates will develop the knowledge, skills, and dispositions to support teaching and learning in linguistically and culturally diverse urban settings.

This degree is tailored for students holding a bachelor’s degree in the social studies disciplines and seeking secondary Social Studies teacher certification. Length: 3 semesters (Intern I, Intern II, Student Teacher)

Youth and Community Studies with teacher certification

You also have the option to major in Youth and Community Studies while pursuing a teacher certification in either English or Social Studies. YCS majors will complete the University of Texas Urban Teachers professional development sequence.

 

Teacher Certification Programs through other Colleges

The length, starting semesters, and application periods below refer to the part that is tracked by the College of Education in order to recommend students for teacher certification.  If you are interested in teacher certification in one of these areas, you should contact the advising office in the College of Natural Sciences, College of Liberal Arts, or College of Fine Arts.

You may be required to submit a separate application for the program prior to submitting a PDS application to the College of Education.

UTeach Natural Sciences (Science, Computer Science, and Math)

Students who wish to teach Math, Computer Science, or Science in middle or high school subjects will choose a major in the College of Natural Sciences. You are still required to apply to the Professional Development Sequence through the College of Education in order to be recommended for teacher certification.

Length: 1 semester (Student Teacher)

Starts: Fall and Spring

PDS Application Periods: February 1 to March 1 (Fall) or September 1 to October 1 (Spring)

UTeach Liberal Arts (English, Social Studies, and Languages Other Than English)

Students who wish to teach English, Social Studies, or a Foreign Language in middle or high school will choose a major in the College of Liberal Arts. You are still required to apply to the Professional Development Sequence through the College of Education in order to be recommended for teacher certification.

Length: 2 semesters (Intern, Student Teacher)

Requirements: UTeach Liberal Arts Coursework

PDS Application Periods: February 1 to March 1 (Fall) and September 1 to October 1 (Spring)

UTeach Fine Arts (Art, Dance, Music, Theatre)

Students who wish to teach visual arts, dance, music or theatre in middle or high school will choose a major in the College of Fine Arts. You are still required to apply to the Professional Development Sequence through the College of Education in order to be recommended for teacher certification.
