The finalist teams for the inaugural year of the President’s Award for Global Learning. includes Educational Psychology Professors Ricardo Ainslie and Kevin Cokley.
Ainslie’s team’s project, Health and Housing: A Comprehensive Needs Assessment of Low-Income Communities in Puebla, Mexico, is one of two finalists in the Latin America region. Together, the team created a comprehensive assessment of health needs, determinants, and resources in underserved areas of the region. The project focused on aspects of the built environment including housing, water, and air.
Cokley’s team is one of two finalists for the Africa region. Their project, The Color Complex, explores the influences of colorism in Ghana through the lenses of media and businesses; identity and sense of self-worth; the cyclical nature of skin bleaching in families; and social mobility.
One award winner per region will be selected from the 14 finalist teams. Award winners will receive up to $25,000 toward project implementation costs and academic support.
The President’s Award for Global Learning is the signature program of the International Board of Advisors. The projects focused on expanding existing research, social impact, and entrepreneurship within seven regions across Africa, Asia, Latin America, Europe, Russia, and the Caucasus.
Ricardo Ainslie is the M.K. Hage Centennial Professor in Education. Kevin Cokley is the Oscar and Anne Mauzy Regents Professor for Educational Research and Development.
