UT Austin’s Women’s Soccer Program Makes History with First SEC Championship forTexas Athletics

With a game-winning goal just 11 minutes before the match was over, The University of Texas at Austin’s women’s soccer team landed UT its first Southeastern Conference victory since the Longhorns were inaugurated into the league in July. At least nine COE students participated in the historic win on November 12, which was celebrated with the traditional lighting of the tower as the team assembled at the steps for their group picture that evening.

The game-winning goal was scored by Carly Montgomery, a Corporate Communications major from North Carolina, after finding a corner kick from Physical Culture and Sports senior Lexi Missimo from Southlake, Texas.

I’m so incredibly proud of this team,” Head Coach Angela Kelly told Texas Athletics following her fifth SEC championship with over the course of her collegiate career and her first at Texas. “Just what a battle, right? We weathered the first half and then opened up during the second half and executed a wonderful set piece.

The winning Texas team includes Missimo, fellow Physical Culture and Sports major Mia Justus, Sport Management students Olivia Ahern, Jilly Shimkin and Taylor Dellosso, Applied Movement Science graduate students Abby Allen and Lauren Lampomarda, Health Promotion and Behavioral Science student Trinity Byars and Exercise Science major Megan Hogate.

The College of Education is proud to be a home to many Texas Longhorns student athletes and congratulates our talented students for this historic accomplishment. Our COE community is committed to fully supporting their combined athletic and academic careers.
