Department of Kinesiology and Health Education

Lisa Griffin • Associate Professor

Lisa Griffin, associate professor in the Department of Kinesiology and Health Education, has received a Faculty Research Seed Grant from Texas Global for her work using artificial intelligence-based video analysis and real-time feedback to support remote rehabilitation of balance control in patients with diabetic peripheral neuropathy. The project is a partnership with Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Beersheba, Israel.

Texas Global advances The University of Texas at Austin’s academic mission by leading its international research, faculty engagement and partnerships with higher education institutions and organizations around the world.

Griffin’s research focuses on neuromuscular control and changes associated with fatigue, aging, subacromial shoulder pain and peripheral neuropathy. She also develops electrical stimulation protocols for individuals with paralysis.

Griffin is the director of the Neuromuscular Physiology Research Laboratory and serves as editor-in-chief of the Translational Journal of the American College of Sports Medicine

Owen Beck • Assistant Professor

Owen Beck, assistant professor in KHE, has secured a sponsored research agreement with New Balance for his Human Locomotion Lab and received UT Austin’s Discovery to Impact Texas+ Proof of Concept Award. The partnership will support the development of specialized performance-enhancing socks which use targeted pressure to improve running efficiency.

The Human Loco Lab studies how biomechanics influence human physiology and locomotor performance. Beck’s research generally intends to make walking and running less effortful so that humans can move faster, conserve energy and be a little less sweaty during long Texas summers.
