Dr. Guillermo "Willie" Martinez III currently serves as the Associate Vice Chancellor of Student Engagement & Academic Success for the Austin Community College District (ACC). He leads district wide priorities in academic support services, student experience and outcomes, oversight of ACCs premier learning environment - the ACCelerators, the career exploration facility - Make It Center, and strategic initiatives to promote student access and success across the student life cycle. Willie has experience in leading teams with multiple multi-million dollar operating budgets (up to $45 million), assisted in obtaining over $10 million in grant funding for student success initiatives, and has been responsible for over $20 million in capital projects under his purview. Willie works collaboratively across ACC to implement data-informed strategic initiatives to advance equitable student success. During his 12 year tenure at ACC, Willie has worked in Institutional Research & Analytics, Student Affairs, Academic Affairs within the Provosts Office, Computer Studies department, and teaching Statistics as an adjunct faculty. He has served and chaired multiple shared governance committees ensuring clear communication, collaboration, and transparency across institutional efforts.
Dr. Martinez has 20 years experience in the education sector. He has always been passionate about fostering education and career pathways for social equity and economic mobility. Willie has served on various panels and presented on data analytics, student success, operationalizing equity, leading with empathy, student affairs, change management, and community colleges. The American Council of Education (ACE) lists Dr. Martinez as a subject matter expert for agile administrators who lead innovation efforts through rapid, iterative improvement to evolve in this changing environment.
Dr. Martinez has a Ph.D. in higher education administration, a masters degree in actuarial mathematics from the University of Texas at Austin and two bachelor degrees in the areas of applied statistics and in pure mathematics from the University of Texas at San Antonio. Willie served on the foundation board of Big Brothers Big Sisters Central Texas, the advisory council of the Texas Education Consortium for Male Students of Color, has held various positions with the Texas Association of Chicanos in Higher Education, and was an inaugural Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board Data Fellow. Willie has consulted on projects for the Texas Association of Community Colleges, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and Excelencia in Education.
Dr. Martinez is a multi-generation South Texan, raised in the border town of Eagle Pass, Texas. He is married with two children and is a passionate leader who believes in the power of education for all.
