Luz Álvarez-Sims is an Assistant Professor of Practice in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction in the area of Bilingual and Bicultural Education at UT Austin. In her current role, she also serves as a cohort coordinator supporting pre-service bilingual teachers through their PDS courses and internships in public schools.

She has 15 years of teaching experience at the elementary and middle school level in two-way dual language programs. Luz has been involved in different committees within public schools, and at the state and district level, to advocate for bilingual education. She has also served as a cooperating teacher for over 10 years supporting and mentoring future bilingual educators.

Through her career, she has received the following recognition: Campus Teacher of the Year, Austin Area Association for Bilingual Education (AAABE) Bilingual Teacher of the Year, Texas Association for Bilingual Education (TABE) Bilingual Teacher of the Year, and Humanities Texas Linden Heck Howell Award for Teaching of Texas History.
