Jay D. Scribner, professor emeritus and former chair of the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy, passed away on September 11. A pioneer in educational administration and leadership, Dr. Scribner came to the University of Texas at Austin in 1989 after serving 14 years as dean of the College of Education at Temple University.
As the Ken McIntyre Professor for Excellence in School Leadership for 20 years, Dr. Scribner advised and mentored countless graduate students and early-career faculty, many of whom have established significant legacies of their own. While primarily involved with what are now the Cooperative Superintendency Program and the Texas Principal Leadership Academy, he also was instrumental in the development of the Education Policy and Planning Program.
Pedro Reyes, professor of Educational Leadership and Policy and a colleague of Dr. Scribner’s, said, “Dr. Scribner was a giant in the field of school administration. His intellectual work started with the Politics of Education where he made major contributions to its development, including writing a pioneering book on the field. His impact is still felt through his close colleagues and former students as they continue to develop his initial theoretical and applied approaches to the study of education politics. He was truly a gem and always a pleasure to be around. He will be greatly missed.”
In addition to his academic career, Dr. Scribner worked tirelessly in service to his field. Long an active participant of the University Council for Educational Administration (UCEA), he became its president in 1989. UCEA has since honored his legacy with the establishment of the Dr. Jay D. Scribner Mentoring Award.
A memorial service will be held on Mount Desert Island off the coast of his home state of Maine on June 23, 2022.
