Biography

Dr. Alejandra Barraza received her Ph.D. in Early Childhood Education in 2017.  Her dissertation work compared the perspectives of superintendents, district-level administrators, and school/building administrators on early childhood practices. She was interested in how administrators see high-quality early childhood education, particularly for the young underserved population. She continued to work full time as she pursued her doctorate which allowed her the unique opportunity to bridge theory with practice. As part of her doctoral work, she was able to intern at the U.S. Department of Education with Secretary Arne Duncan during the time the Office of Early Learning was being established at DOE, allowing her to understand education policy at the national level.

Barraza taught for 8 years in 3rd and 4th grade in the San Antonio Independent School District. She was an assistant principal in 3 schools and is now the Network Principal of Carroll and Tynan Early Childhood Center overseeing the education of 700 students with a staff of over 120 employees.
