Juan A. Gonzalez is a native of Stockton, California, and a doctoral student in the Higher Education Leadership and Policy program at The University of Texas at Austin. He currently serves as a Graduate Research Assistant with Project MALES and as a Teaching Assistant for a Latinx Identities study abroad course. Juan is a former Graduate Archer Fellow, during which he worked with Equimundo: Center for Masculinities and Social Justice. He is a Fulbright Alumni Ambassador, a former board member of Fulbright Latinx, and currently serves on the board of the nonprofit Access Abroad Project.

Juan’s research agenda centers on study abroad and international exchange programs, with particular attention to issues of access, identity, and belonging for Black and Latino men in higher education. His work is informed by critical, qualitative, and equity-oriented approaches that bridge higher education research, global learning, and youth development.

Prior to UT Austin, Juan served as Assistant Director of Programs and Education at Life Pieces to Masterpieces in Washington, D.C., a nonprofit organization focused on youth mentoring and creative development for Black and Brown boys and young men from under-resourced communities. He is a Fulbright grantee, having completed a term in Argentina (2022), and a Returned Peace Corps Volunteer who served in Samoa (2018–2020). Juan has also held roles as a Residence Director and DEI Coordinator during a Semester at Sea voyage, and previously worked in housing and residential life and new student orientation at California State University, Long Beach.

Juan earned an Associate of Arts in Social Sciences from San Joaquin Delta College, a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology, and a Master of Science in Counseling with a concentration in Student Development in Higher Education from California State University, Long Beach.
