Loren Welles is a doctoral student in the Education Policy and Planning program. Her research interests broadly center school and district improvement, teacher and school leader preparation and workforce issues, school climate, and safety. Ultimately, her work aims to bridge the gaps between research, policy, and practice. Loren is an analyst on the Legislative Budget Boards School Performance Review team, where she crafts evidence-based recommendations for Texas school districts in the areas of planning, leadership, and community involvement.
While earning her masters degree in education, she was selected for the University of Texas System Graduate Archer Fellowship program, which aims to develop leaders who understand the federal policymaking process, solve relevant policy problems, and elevate public discourse about policy and politics through applied coursework and a competitive internship in the nations capital. She interned in the education department of a think tank in Washington, D.C., and worked on multiple projects for the early childhood, K12, and higher education teams. Previously, she gained federal policy experience as a Congressional intern in the U.S. House of Representatives. In the past, Loren worked as a research associate for the Texas Institute for Excellence in Mental Health, a program manager for the nonprofit Austin Soundwaves, and a music teacher for seven years in the public school system. Her background in teaching sparked her passion for policy and applied research that supports more equitable educational systems.
