As the Associate Dean for Diversity and Inclusive Excellence, Dr. Salinas guides the College of Education across all areas that address the university and the college’s focus on equity. Supporting college-wide as well as faculty and student lead initiatives that reflect the school’s commitments to inclusivity, Salinas works to ensure the college’s Signature Impact Areas remain central to our efforts. Salinas is also involved in student recruitment and success programs that are fundamental to preparing undergraduates for Texas public schools and health and activity pathways.
Since her arrival at UT Austin in 2002, Salinas has served as chair of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction and cohort coordinator in the Social Studies Secondary Education Urban Teacher Education Program. She also teaches in the ESL/Generalist Elementary and Elementary Bilingual & Bicultural Teacher Education Programs.
Salinas has been honored with the 2015 Elizabeth Massey Award for Excellence in Teacher Education and 2012 Regents’ Outstanding Teaching Award. In 2013, she received the American Education Research Association (AERA), Division K, Innovations in Research on Diversity in Teacher Education Award, and she also received the American Education Research Association (AERA), Division G, Mentor Award in 2021.
Salinas is the author and co-author of numerous articles and book chapters. Her main areas of research interest are social studies and citizenship education in linguistically and culturally diverse teaching and learning context. Her work has been published in a broad range of journals, including Journal of Social Studies Research, Theory and Research in Social Education as well as the Bilingual Research Journal, Multicultural Perspectives and the High School Journal. She is currently editorial board member Teachers College Record, the Bilingual Research Journal and Theory and Research in Social Education.
Before entering higher education, Salinas was a high school teacher in Texas. She holds a B.A. in liberal arts from The University of Texas at Austin (1983), and MA+ in education from Texas A&I Kingsville (1985) and her doctorate in education from The University of Texas at Austin (1999).
