On behalf of my colleagues, our doctoral students, and the many students enrolled in our teacher certification programs, welcome to the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. C&I is a diverse community of scholars and public servants committed to improving the teaching and learning experiences of students and their families in schools and in out of school settings.

The faculty in C&I attend to those linguistic and cultural assets that define a pluralist and inclusive democracy. We share our ambitions with our graduate and undergraduate students who are a hopeful glimpse into the future of public education and nonprofit organizations. Together we aspire to address inequities and provide access and opportunity by broadening if not disrupting traditional notions of technology, health, science, mathematics, literacy, and citizenship. We applaud those teachers, scholars, and activists who consider that the dynamic terrain of the classroom as one that is focused on a more just and equitable society. As a result, our research, teaching, and service is dedicated to transforming political, economic and social institutions.

As you review the many graduate and undergraduate programs available and the accomplishments of my colleagues in C&I, I encourage you to join our efforts as public intellectuals in understanding the complex endeavor of education. In C&I, our world-class faculty and immeasurably talented students truly believe that what starts here changes the world.
