Master’s Program

Department of Curriculum and Instruction

Physical Education Teacher Education is not accepting master’s program applications for fall 2024.

Through empirical research and best pedagogical practice, students enrolled in Physical Education Teacher Education experience highly interactive course work. As the health of children and adolescents becomes an increasingly important topic, our students will become experts in the factors that influence their motor performance, knowledge, dispositions, and abilities related to physical activity participation and health.

Coursework focuses on the research of:

  • teaching in physical education
  • teacher education in physical education
  • curriculum
  • supervision
  • analysis of teaching and
  • cultural influences in physical activity and education settings

Students are required to conduct independent research projects. Graduates from our program have excellent opportunities for job placement in academia, research institutions, and the public sector.

The Physical Education Teacher Education program offers several degree options:

  • Master of Arts with Thesis (M.A.) (30 Credit Hours)
  • Master of Arts with Report (M.A.) (33 Credit Hours)
  • Master of Education (M.Ed.) (36 Credit Hours)

Each of the master’s degree options prepares students not only in physical education curriculum but also in research, cultural studies, coaching and interdisciplinary coursework that align with a student’s interests and career goals. Graduates from our program go on to become teachers, teacher educators, professors, physical activity leaders, athletic coaches and policymakers.

All programs must include at least six semester hours outside the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. Up to nine hours of upper-division undergraduate coursework may be counted toward the M.Ed. (distributed as follows: six hours in Curriculum and Instruction and three hours outside C&I, or three hours in C&I and six hours outside C&I). Up to six hours of upper-division undergraduate coursework may be counted toward the M.A.
