The University of Texas at Austin will always feel like home to me. The most important thing that UT has offered me has been the encouragement, wisdom, and guidance of the faculty who have become colleagues and mentors to me. Some of the best years of my life, the most enduring friendships, and greatest insights came out of my experiences as a graduate student. I will always call UT home, and I will carry valuable lessons and memories wherever I go. Go Longhorns!
Why UT?
When I was looking for a place to do graduate work, the University of Texas offered everything I was looking for. When I met the faculty, in particular Dr. Cinthia Salinas, I knew these individuals were not only passionate about their research, but also deeply interested in helping their students grow as people, teachers, and scholars. The social studies education program, with its commitment to constructivist teaching and concern for preparing teachers for a new diverse world, aligned well with my values. Overall, UT was simply the most natural choice.
Life After UT
After receiving my Ph.D. from the College of Education, I approached the job market filled with both excitement and confidence. Having a degree from one of the top universities in the country gives you a perspective about what you are able to accomplish in your field. As a graduate student, with the help of faculty I presented at national conferences, met leaders in my research field, conducted research studies, and published my first article. I learned what it meant to see the best in students and how to teach people to become teachers. All of this knowledge has helped me become a scholar and professor.
