Rachel Ozerkevich

Dr. Rachel Ozerkevich is an Assistant Professor of Physical Culture and Sport Studies in the Department of Kinesiology at The University of Texas at Austin. She taught previously at Kenyon College and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She received her Ph.D. and M.A. (both in Art History) from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and her B.A. from the University of British Columbia. Her research focuses on the visual field surrounding spectator sports in Western Europe, Canada, and the US, from the late nineteenth century through the 1980s. She is especially interested in the intersections between the illustrated sports press and painting.

Dr. Ozerkevich's first book, Aesthetes and Athletes: Capturing French Sport from the Belle Epoque to the First World War (published by the University of Texas Press in 2027), examines how painterly retouching, manipulation, and the arrangement of photomechanical images in the early French sports press provided readers in Europe and North America vicarious experiences of major sports events. She has published in journals such as Early Popular Visual Culture, Sport History Review, Interdisciplinary Studies in the Long Nineteenth Century, The Journal of Sport History, and The International Journal of the History of Sport.

Dr. Ozerkevich teaches courses in Sport Management (primarily Media and Public Relations) and sport media. She is accepting graduate students interested in sports photography and the history of sports media.
