In 1969, Jan Late McMillan graduated from UT Austin with a degree in elementary education and embarked on a career that would leave a lasting impact on the field of special education. Working extensively with children diagnosed with reading disabilities over her 35-year career, McMillan became an expert in the field and a champion for dyslexia awareness.
Today, Jan’s commitment to education and extensive background as a reading specialist has culminated into a new opportunity that will undoubtedly shape the future of dyslexia diagnosis and intervention in Texas and beyond. Through the development of the Dyslexia Certificate Program offered through the Department of Special Education in the College of Education, Jan and her husband Dick will create a comprehensive educational program devoted to addressing critical issues related to reading disabilities that will have an impact far beyond the classroom.
The college’s new dyslexia certificate will offer tools and training for current teachers, clinicians, and school leaders to gain a deeper understanding of the challenges facing students with dyslexia while fostering more inclusive and supportive learning environments for children with reading disabilities. The program will also extend to the personal support systems of dyslexic students, offering learning opportunities for parents, siblings and other family members to better prepare them to assist outside of the classroom.
By creating pathways for teachers to gain the knowledge and skills necessary to recognize signs of dyslexia and effectively teach dyslexic students, this new certificate program is taking an important step in tackling learning disparities on so many levels. We are grateful to Jan and Dick for their passion and support and look forward to seeing the impact that this generous gift will have on our community.

The Jan Late McMillan Study Lounge opened on October 30, 2023. Located on the first floor of the George I. Sanchez Building, this dedicated space celebrates Jan’s accomplishments and generosity and honors the essential role educators have in children’s lives. The Dyslexia Certificate Program will launch its first cohort fall 2024.
