Different Shades of Working-Class: Examining Latino/a Parents’ Decision-Making Processes Regarding Enrollment in a Parent Academy
Joanna is a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at Howard University. She received her B.S. in Geosciences from Trinity University, her M.S. in Geographic Information Science from the University of Denver and her Ph.D. in Educational Leadership and Policy from The University of Texas at Austin. Joanna’s postdoc is funded by an NSF ITEST grant and has her collaborating with the E-Communities research team investigating how a collaboration between middle school STEM educators and engineers impact underserved youth’s participation in engineering design.
During her time at UT, Joanna had a varied set of experiences: from collaborating, presenting, and publishing with faculty members, to interning as an education policy fellow in the Capitol office of Texas State Representative Mary González, to interning as an Archer graduate policy fellow at the White Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics in Washington, D.C. Her research interests are diverse and include Latino/a parental engagement, GIS and spatial analysis in education policy, school/family/community partnerships, and STEM education. Joanna is a Gates Millennium Scholar Alumna, a Barbara Jackson Scholar, a Clark Scholar, a PEO Scholar, and an Archer Fellow. She is a native of the Rio Grande Valley in South Texas (Pharr, TX).
