Dan Geist (he/him) is a doctoral student in the educational policy and planning program at The University of Texas at Austin. Inspired by his time as a classroom teacher, his research interests broadly examine nationwide school choice movements and politics' influence on education policy. He is especially interested in the ongoing privatization of public education through policy measures such as vouchers, education savings accounts (ESAs), and tax credit scholarships. He also seeks to understand parental rights in shaping how we think about public education and religion's role in educational decision-making.
Dan earned his B.S. in secondary education from Kansas State University with an emphasis in social studies. Before pursuing his Ph.D at UT Austin, he taught middle school English and social studies for five years in private and public schools. While teaching, he earned his Ed.M. in educational policy, organization, and leadership from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He received the Graduate Recruitment Fellowship to support his studies at UT Austin. Dan was also a summer 2025 Graduate Archer Fellow in Washington D.C., where he advocated for equitable education policies focused on enhancing public education for all students.
