Emilio is a first year Ph.D. student in the Cultural Studies in Education program. As a native Texan, first generation college graduate and a Chicano educator, he is also the Program Manager for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) at Austin Achieve Public Schools, a tuition-free public charter school in East Austin. At Austin Achieve, Emilio primarily trains educators on how to implement antiracist/anti-bias practices in the classroom. Before his work in DEI, Emilio was a middle school dean of math and science, also at Austin Achieve, and previously worked as a school director of Atitlan Multicultural Academy, an international school on the shores of Lake Atitlan in Guatemala. With a decade of teaching experience, Emilio has taught at the elementary level and seventh through twelfth grade math and science. He is currently interested in researching how culturally responsive pedagogy impacts the development of identity of Chicano youth in Central Texas.
