Kendra Chavera (she/her) is a PhD student in the Educational Policy and Planning program. She received her Bachelor of Arts from St. Edwards University. She then received her Master of Science in Social Work from the Steve Hicks School of Social Work at UT Austin, with a concentration in Administration and Policy Practice. She received a certification in nonprofit studies through LBJ School of Public Affairs, which led to further bridging community engagement and partnerships in education through the CONNECT Fellowship program.
She is a certified school based social worker and has many years of experience working in different capacities related to student support for secondary education students in Austin ISD, largely in college and career readiness. Her passion for equity, social justice, and cultural humility-centered interventions in educational spaces is directly tied to her experiences navigating her educational journey in South Austin, as a Chicana, low-income, first-generation college student, who attended Title One schools. She is interested in student supports, interventions, and programming that authentically bridge strengths and needs for schools that serve BIPOC and low-income students and families.
Kendra is passionate about community-level research, incorporating qualitative methods and storytelling into policy research, and uplifting the vibrant community that defined her upbringing. Through an equity and social justice lens, Kendra intends to focus her research on strengthening community engagement and partnerships in K-12 public education.
