Randall (Randy) Lopez is a doctoral student in the Program for Higher Education Leadership and Policy (PHELP). Originally from Corpus Christi, Texas, Randy's academic journey includes acquiring a B.S. in Psychology from Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas and three masters degrees from the United Kingdom, including a M.Sc. in Health Psychology from The University of Central Lancashire, and both a M.Sc. in Counselling Studies and a M.Sc. in Education Research from The University of Edinburgh. Randy's experience abroad was both enriching personally and academically. Due to connections abroad, Randy was able to be published in the academic text, "The Everyday Lives of Gay Men: Autoethnographies of the Ordinary", where, as a contributor, Randy talks about love and loss through a lens that amplifies their voice in giving representation to the queer and Hispanic communities.
Through their social sciences background and exploration of autoethnography, Randy's research interests include: mental health in LGBTQ+ individuals; transgender and non-binary identities existing in higher education; how Senate Bill 17 has shaped the experiences of LGBTQ+ individuals and other marginalized communities on university campuses; first-generation LGBTQ+ individuals' lived experiences in higher education; and the effects of death/bereavement on first-generation students dealing with a parent having a chronic illness.
When they are not engaging with their coursework and in class, Randy works on campus as a senior academic advisor for Biomedical Engineering. They advise all BME undergraduate students and focus on programming that enhances belonging and community within the major.
In their free time, Randy enjoys exploring the local Austin vibes, finding adventure in traveling, connecting with friends, reading a good book, trying yummy food places, enjoying the Marvel (specifically Scarlet Witch and Storm) and Pokémon content, going to concerts, and checking out movies/film.
