Sawyer Tedder is a PhD student in the Program of Higher Education Leadership and Policy interested in the emotional affect of higher education policy on campus LGBTQ+ communities and attacks on ethnic and identity studies programs and units by state legislatures.
Sawyer earned their bachelors in Sociology with a minor in Health Promotion, Education, and Behavior from the University of South Carolina Columbia and their masters in Education Leadership and Policy with a portfolio in LGBTQ Studies from The University of Texas at Austin where their research focused on queer socialization norms in graduate programs and trans-inclusive housing policies at US residential campuses.
Sawyer has worked in higher education for a decade in roles from admissions, academic advising, student success initiatives, program coordination, and graduate program management. They currently serve as Senior Academic Coordinator of Student Affairs for the Department of Social and Cultural Analysis at UT-Austin.
Outside of school, Sawyer is active in the local Austin improv scene, regularly performing at local theatres such as Hideout and Coldtowne. They also enjoy yoga, running, pickleball, and live music. Previously, they served a two-year term as chair for the GLSEN-Austin chapter where they put 75+ Rainbow Library collections in K-12 schools throughout Central Texas.
