Early Childhood to Sixth Grade Bilingual Generalist (BIL) is designed for students seeking Texas certification to teach in a bilingual or general elementary classroom. You will earn a B.S. in Education.
Our bilingual program is specifically focused on educational issues that relate to students whose first language is Spanish. For this reason, fluency in Spanish is required.
See more steps to become a teacher.
As a Bilingual Education Major, You Will
- learn to provide equal educational opportunities to elementary students of limited English proficiency
- adopt teaching practices specific to educating bilingual children
- infuse principles of social and emotional learning into your curriculum
Gain Classroom Teaching Experience
In addition to core coursework, you will participate in a Professional Development Sequence (PDS). Through this teacher preparation program, you will learn the foundations of teaching from coursework, fieldwork, and observations to student teaching placements in classrooms of various elementary grade levels over the course of three semesters.
You will also learn the fundamentals of bilingual teaching such as:
- how to prepare engaging lesson plans
- developing skills for consulting with classroom teachers and parents
- how to support and advocate for students who are not native English speakers
Our program has close connections with local area school districts, and a strong alumni network to support placements in student teaching.
What You’ll Get

Through the PDS, you will earn up to 800 hours of classroom experience and be well prepared to demonstrate leadership and experience in your teaching position.
