Early Childhood to Sixth Grade Bilingual Generalist (BIL) is designed for students seeking Texas certification to teach in a bilingual or general elementary classroom. You will earn a B.S. in Education.
Our bilingual program is specifically focused on educational issues that relate to students whose first language is Spanish. For this reason, fluency in Spanish is required.

Classroom Teaching Experience
In addition to taking core coursework, you will participate in a Professional Development Sequence (PDS), a three-semester teacher preparation experience that combines coursework, field experiences, classroom observations and student teaching. Working in elementary classrooms at multiple grade levels, you’ll gradually build the skills and confidence needed to become an effective educator.
Through the PDS, you’ll gain up to 800 hours of classroom experience, far exceeding the state’s 30-hour requirement. This extensive hands-on preparation helps you enter the profession ready to lead and make an immediate impact.
You’ll also develop key bilingual education skills, including:
- Designing engaging, student-centered lesson plans
- Collaborating with classroom teachers and families
- Supporting and advocating for multilingual learners
Our program’s strong partnerships with local school districts and extensive alumni network provide valuable support in securing high-quality student teaching placements.
What You’ll Get
This program allows you to work towards certifications in both Bilingual Education and Early Childhood-6th Grade Generalist. Bilingual education teachers are in high demand in Texas and across the U.S. Bilingual teacher positions often come with an additional stipend to your salary.
Bilingual Education majors may be eligible for the AISD Future Teacher Scholarship, which provides $5,000 in funding distributed across the final three semesters of the program.
