Bilingual Core Subjects/Generalist (Early Childhood – 6th Grade)

Early Childhood to Sixth Grade Bilingual Generalist (BIL) is designed for students seeking Texas certification to teach in a bilingual or general elementary classroom. You will earn a B.S. in Education.
Our bilingual program is specifically focused on educational issues that relate to students whose first language is Spanish. For this reason, fluency in Spanish is required.
- Learn to provide equal educational opportunities to elementary students of limited English proficiency
- Adopt teaching practices specific to educating bilingual children
- Infuse principles of social and emotional learning into your curriculum
Classroom Teaching Experience
In addition to core coursework, you will participate in a Professional Development Sequence (PDS). Through this teacher preparation program, you will learn the foundations of teaching from coursework, fieldwork, and observations to student teaching placements in classrooms of various elementary grade levels over the course of three semesters.
You will also learn the fundamentals of bilingual teaching such as:
- how to prepare engaging lesson plans
- developing skills for consulting with classroom teachers and parents
- how to support and advocate for students who are not native English speakers
Our program has close connections with local area school districts, and a strong alumni network to support placements in student teaching.
What You’ll Get
This program allows you to work towards certifications in both Bilingual Education and Early Childhood-6th Grade Generalist. Bilingual education teachers are in high demand in Texas and across the U.S. Bilingual teacher positions often come with an additional stipend to your salary.
Additionally, Austin Independent School District is currently awarding our bilingual education majors up to $5000 in scholarships during the last four semesters of our program with no strings attached after graduation.
Through the PDS, you will earn up to 800 hours of classroom experience, far exceeding the 30-hour requirement set by the state. You will be well prepared to demonstrate leadership and experience in your teaching position.
