Case Garza, a prevention science doctoral student in the Department of Kinesiology and Health Education, recently published his first study as primary author in the Journal of Healthy Eating and Active Living. The article, co-authored with KHE faculty member Deborah Salvo and peers from COE’s People, Health and Place Lab, collects data on both neighborhood variation in playground availability across metropolitan Austin and identifies opportunities to expand playground access.
The study reflects an emerging research agenda that Garza has developed during his time at UT. As a graduate research assistant in the PHP Lab and a doctoral student affiliate with the Center for Research to Community Impact, he has contributed to research examining how built, social and policy environments shape physical activity and active living opportunities in under resourced communities.
