Michaela is a doctoral student in the Educational Policy and Planning (EPP) program whose research interests are broadly aimed at attaining greater educational equity in PK-20 public education. She plans to examine responses to teacher attrition and shortages in an effort to better understand how we can build a high-quality, sustainable educator workforce.
After completing her undergraduate degree at Santa Clara, Michaela worked in public health policy advocacy in her hometown of Sacramento, CA. While completing her Masters degree, she served on the policy and professional learning teams at the Chicago Public Schools Office of Equity.
She is currently a member of Expanding Pathways in Computing (EPIC), a research team led by Dr. Carol Fletcher and Dr. Joshua Childs, aimed at increasing the diversity of students in computing by promoting state-level computer science education reform. Michaela is also the assistant to graduate services and a graduate writing consultant at UT Austin's University Writing Center, and is the managing editor for the Texas Education Review, a peer-reviewed education journal housed in the College of Education. Outside of UT, she serves as the Division L (Education Policy & Politics) Senior Representative on the AERA Graduate Student Council.
In her free time, Michaela volunteers with Camp Kesem, a nationwide nonprofit empowering college student leaders to provide year-round support and a free summer camp for children impacted by their parent's cancer.
