Vanessa Garcia (she/her) is a doctoral student in the Program in Higher Education Leadership and Policy (PHELP) interested in research that focuses on college students from Texas border towns and how/if border culture plays a part in student development when attending predominantly white institutions (PWIs). Her focus involves investigating the role of family dynamics and how it may impact holistic student growth.
She earned her bachelors degree in Communication Science Disorders from Texas A&M International University and her masters degree in Student Affairs in Higher Education from Texas State University. Throughout her time at Texas State University, she worked as a graduate assistant within the Personalized Academic and Career Exploration (PACE) center as an academic coach. This space ignited an interest in working with college access, marginalized student populations, and academic affairs. Throughout this time, Vanessa also completed internships with Texas States Athletic Compliance Office and Texas Lutheran Universitys Career Services Office.
Succeeding her time at Texas State University, Vanessa has worked at UT Austin for the last six years at the Vick Advising Excellence Center. She helps serve and support both exploratory students on campus as well as academic advisors. Her vision around supporting college students is guided in serving the whole student. Vanessa has been an active member of UT Austins Hispanic Faculty and Staff Association for the last six years and has served on the executive board for three of those years. Vanessa has received multiple achievement awards while at UT Austin including the Student Success Champion Award and the James W. Vick Award for Academic Advising.
During her free time, Vanessa enjoys experiencing live shows in Austin and the surrounding areas. She enjoys spending time with her family and friends. Vanessa is an avid sports fan. She is particularly enthused when cheering for the Longhorns on gameday. She is also a member of the Latinx Graduate Student Association where she hopes to continue to build community and social connections.
