Welcome to the Department of Educational Psychology at The University of Texas at Austin. We are a dynamic and nationally ranked department with programs, faculty, and students representing a broad range of expertise and interests and sharing a commitment to the highest standards of academic and professional training in educational psychology.
Educational psychology is the scientific study of human experience in educative contexts broadly construed. Educational psychologists conduct research to advance theory and practice relevant to human actions and learning that occurs across the lifespan from infancy to old age and across settings, including the home, school, peer group, military, health, business and industry, and technology.
We have graduate programs in four distinct areas: Counseling Psychology and Counselor Education; Human Development, Culture and Learning Sciences; Quantitative Methods; and School Psychology. All program areas prepare specialists at the masters and doctoral degree level with skills necessary to fill a variety of roles in settings in which knowledge of human development, learning theory, research and evaluation methods, and individual differences in behavior is essential.
An advanced degree in educational psychology may qualify students for careers as university or college instructors, psychological researchers, program evaluators, and measurement consultants. Degrees earned within the program areas of School Psychology and Counseling Psychology/Counselor Education may also qualify students for professional practice careers as counselors, psychologists, and specialists in school psychology.
Our department also offers a transcriptable undergraduate minor in Educational Psychology, allowing undergraduate students to augment their major degree with a broadly-applicable minor, with course subject options in counseling and interventions, diversity, development, and education through the life span, statistics, learning skills, and research.
