Fellowship Guidelines and Payment Schedule

Guidelines

  • Some awards require students to be registered full-time, meaning taking nine credit hours in the fall and spring semesters and three credit hours in summer.
  • “Satisfactory progress” is defined by the program.
  • Students need advance permission from the dean of the Graduate School and possibly from the departments for fellowships to transfer when a student changes programs.
  • The Graduate School reserves the right to defer/adjust part of all of the fellowship when a student is receiving supplemental funding.
  • If students are not Texas residents, they may receive a tuition reduction benefit associated with certain fellowship awards. Contact your department for more information.

Payment Schedule

Stipend – Pays out monthly on the 28th of each month except:

  • November – Moved to the Wednesday before Thanksgiving
  • December – Moved to January 1st to catch spring registration audit
  • May – Moved to June 1st to catch summer registration audit
  • February – Moved to February 26th

One Time Payment – Pays out at the beginning of the semester

Fellowships – Pay for the coming month

Work Appointments – Pay for the past month

Medical Insurance Payment – Pays to the student at the beginning of the semester; student is responsible for using it to purchase insurance

Payment Dates (when UT disburses funds, not necessarily when the student receives payment):

  • Fall – September 1st
  • Spring – January 1st
  • Summer – June 1st
