The College of Education at UT Austin, ranked #4 among public institutions, offers three bachelor’s options for students seeking an undergraduate degree related to health, education or the business of culture, sport and entertainment: a Bachelor of Science in Education, a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology and Health and a Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training. Within the first two degrees, the college offers majors ranging from elementary teacher preparation to youth and community studies and applied movement science to sports management. Bachelor of Science in Education
The College of Education offers four majors within the Bachelor of Science in Education degree. Through a unique combination of equity-minded coursework, students are guided by expert faculty and practitioners to manage, lead and teach in a variety of educational and communty-based environments. Students who choose one of the Bachelor of Science in Education majors with a teacher preparation component are also on their way to teacher certification at any grade level.
All-Level Special Education (Early Childhood – 12th Grade)
Learn to engage with students with disabilities ranging from mild to severe. This major prepares students to work with early childhood through 12th-grade students with disabilities.
Bilingual Core Subjects/Generalist (Early Childhood – 6th Grade)
Learn to teach students of linguistically and culturally diverse backgrounds inside of bilingual classrooms. This major prepares students to teach in the areas of biliteracy, math, science and social studies through a sociocultural awareness. Fluency in Spanish is required before starting the program.
English as a Second Language Generalist (Early Childhood – 6th Grade)
Learn to teach students of linguistically and culturally diverse backgrounds at the elementary level. This major prepares students to teach in the areas of literacy, math, science and social studies through a sociocultural awareness.
Youth and Community Studies
Focus on interacting and engaging with children and youth in a variety of disciplines and contexts. Students will have the option to pursue specializations in early childhood, special populations or youth and social services. Graduates with this degree are prepared to engage with children as counselors, teachers and youth leaders.
Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology and Health
The College of Education offers five majors within the Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology and Health degree. Through a combination of physical, health equity and community-minded learning, our students have the opportunity to study a wide range of areas such as human movement, health behavior and the business and culture of sports. Many of our graduates go on to become physical therapists, teachers, coaches, trainers, researchers and more.
Applied Movement Science
Study the basic and applied movement sciences as you prepare for a career in health and fitness, personal training, strength and conditioning, sports performance, coaching and physical activity or public health.
Exercise Science
This major is ideal if you are interested in health professions and sport sciences. You will be prepared to go on to earn graduate and professional degrees or pursue a career in fitness, health and sport due to the applied nature of the program.
Health Promotion and Behavioral Science
Explore concepts of public health and health promotion from an interdisciplinary perspective. You will develop a strong foundation in theory, epidemiology, program planning and evaluation. Many of our graduates go on to careers in public health, community or university health promotion, government, non-profit health agencies, or graduate and professional education in a variety of fields.
Physical Culture and Sports
Examine the world of sport and physical culture from a humanities and social science perspective. Courses in this program focus on the philosophy, history, sociology and ethics of physical activity and sport culture.
Sport Management
Focus on the sport industry from a business and organizational perspective. You will learn how to manage organizations, athletes and events from the perspectives of marketing, economics, public relations, management and law.
Specializations in Kinesiology and Health
If you are interested in preparing for certifications within the fields of kinesiology and health, a specialization is a great supplement to your major. Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training
This degree prepares students to become athletic trainers in the state of Texas who are focused on the prevention, assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of injuries related to physical activity. Athletic Training is also appropriate for those interested in continuing their education in medicine, sports medicine, physical therapy and other healthcare professions.
Tracks
Tracks are courses in a second field of study for College of Education undergraduates. Most tracks consist of 15 hours, six of which must be upper-division. Tracks do not appear on your UT Austin transcript or diploma. They are reflected on your profile record and degree audit.
Minors
Open to all UT Austin undergraduate students, the College of Education offers minors that complement your primary field of study while diversifying your skillset as you prepare for your future career.
Education
This 18-hour, three-semester teacher preparation sequence is designed to help teacher candidates develop knowledge, skills and dispositions needed to teach secondary English Language Arts and Social Studies.
Educational Leadership and Policy Studies
Explore how leadership, governance and policy shape schools, colleges and community organizations and gain insights into how educational systems function. This minor helps students understand how policies are created, how leadership impacts educational outcomes and how they can address challenges related to disparities, student success and community engagement.
Educational Psychology
Dive into the science of how people learn and develop—both inside and outside the classroom—by exploring physical, social and cognitive development across the lifespan, approaches to counseling and psychotherapy and practical statistical literacy.
Kinesiology and Health
