Charles Butt Scholarship for Aspiring Teachers
The Charles Butt Scholarship for Aspiring Teachers consists of $8,000 in annual funding for up to four years, as well as ongoing training and development opportunities, mentorship from sitting public school educators, and participation in a statewide aspiring teachers network facilitated by the Charles Butt Foundation.

Selection Criteria
Charles Butt scholarship applicants must:
- Enroll full-time in an eligible program:
- EC-6 ESL/Generalist Certification
- Bilingual Certification
- Special Education Certification
- University of Texas Urban Teachers, Social Studies
- University of Texas Urban Teachers, Language Arts
- Youth and Community Studies (with plans to enroll in either Urban Teachers Social Studies or Language Arts)
- Have a strong academic record and history of achievement
- Have demonstrated peer or group leadership skills
- Demonstrate commitment to teaching in a Texas public school, either one that is classified as a Title I school or in a shortage subject area (bilingual or special education)
Scholarship Benefits
All Charles Butt Scholars will receive the following forms of financial and professional support:
- Annual scholarship support up to $8,000 per year for up to four years
- Mentorship from a local educator or principal
- Participation in local and statewide cohort meetings of aspiring teachers
- Inclusion in an on-campus teaching scholar club
- Professional support as they near graduation
- An online community for scholars across the state to connect
Ongoing Requirements
Charles Butt Scholars must:
- Remain enrolled full time in an eligible program:
- EC-6 ESL/Generalist Certification
- Bilingual Certification
- Special Education Certification
- University of Texas Urban Teachers, Social Studies
- University of Texas Urban Teachers, Language Arts
- Youth and Community Studies (with plans to enroll in either Urban Teachers Social Studies or Language Arts)
- Maintain a minimum 3.0 grade point average;
- Participate in Charles Butt Foundation professional development activities;
- Receive a letter of recommendation for continuation from the program coordinator each year; and
- Remain committed to teaching in a Texas public school, either one that is classified as a Title I school or in a shortage subject area (bilingual or special education).
Scholarship Timeline

Application opens.

Application closes January 26, 2025.
March
Charles Butt Foundation will notify you if you have been selected to move on to the final interview stage.
April
Interviews conducted with scholarship finalists by the Charles Butt Foundation.
June
Scholarship recipients notified by the Charles Butt Foundation.
