Dr. Richard Reddick

Dr. Richard Reddick provides essential leadership and focus to support our commitment to a culture of social justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion. His portfolio cuts across all other portfolios in the Dean's Office including faculty and staff hiring, academic program development, and research-practice partnership. Dr. Reddick also provides leadership for student affairs and undergraduate student success initiatives related to undergraduate recruitment, graduation success, and curriculum. He is responsible for equity and inclusion-related initiatives supporting faculty, staff, and students in the college and serves as one of the college’s Title IX liaisons and chair of the college’s Diversity and Inclusion Committee. 

In collaboration with academic leaders, Dr. Reddick has a lead role in fostering the college’s academic excellence by supporting the integration of equity and inclusion themes into college academic programs and practice. Dr. Reddick works to advance the college’s commitment to an organizational climate that is welcoming and respectful of all people, uphold the college’s mission to “create a rich atmosphere for teaching, learning, and inquiry” for all, and continue to strengthen partnerships with internal and external collaborators.

Dr. Reddick has taught at UT Austin since 2007 and has served actively in the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy, college, and university. He served two years as area coordinator for the Program in Higher Education Leadership in his department, and 10 years as the coordinator of the M.Ed program. Dr. Reddick taught graduate courses focused on research methodology, the history of higher education, multicultural modes of mentoring, and social and cultural contexts of education.

Dr. Reddick has been honored with the Eyes of Texas Excellence Award in 2008, the Outstanding Young Texas Ex Award and the John L. Warfield Center for African and African American Studies Teaching Award, all in 2012; the Black Faculty Staff Association Faculty Member of the Year and the recipient of the John L. Warfield Center for African and African American Studies Teaching Award, both in 2013. In 2018, Dr. Reddick received the Austin L.E.A.D.S. Award from Austin Community College’s Office of Equity and Inclusion, and in 2019 he received the Tower Award for Outstanding Community Based Learning Professor from the Longhorn Center for Community Engagement.

Dr. Reddick is the author, co-author, and co-editor of numerous books, peer-reviewed articles, chapters, and opinion pieces. His main areas of research interest are the lives of Black academics, including their approach to work-life balance, service, teaching, and research responsibilities; and their experiences mentoring students. Additionally, Dr. Reddick maintains scholarly interests in diversity in higher education, African American families, and educational policy. Dr. Reddick’s scholarship has been featured by NPR, the BBC, the Associated Press, and The Chronicle of Higher Education. Dr. Reddick also serves on the editorial boards of Urban Education and the Journal of Higher Education.

Prior to working at UT Austin, Dr. Reddick was an elementary and middle school teacher in the Fifth Ward community of Houston, Texas, and a student affairs administrator at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, and Emory University. He earned master’s and doctoral degrees in administration, planning, and social policy at Harvard University in 1998 and 2007, respectively, where he was an editor of the Harvard Educational Review, the recipient of the 2007 Diversity Award, and the marshal of his graduating class. Dr. Reddick attended Department of Defense Education Activity schools, as well as Del Valle, Travis, and Reagan High Schools in Austin ISD, and graduated from Johnston High School.
