Alejandra Ortega, College of Education alumna and 40 Acres Scholar, was named Secondary Teacher of the Year by the Houston Independent School District for the 2017-18 academic year.
Since graduating in 2015, Ortega has worked to create a culture of mutual respect with her students which has been instrumental in her success.
“In our classroom, we say that ‘mistakes are expected, respected, inspected and corrected,” says Ortega.
Ortega received a $2500 cash award and an engraved plaque for the honor and will advance to the state’s regional Teacher of the Year competition.
