Learn more about Dr. Villarreal and what she has to say about UT, the College of Education and her vision for helping Longhorns thrive beyond the Forty Acres.

Where are you from and where did you attend college and graduate school?

I was born in San Antonio but lived most of my life in the Dallas-Fort Worth area and moved to Austin in 2013. I have a bachelor’s degree in psychology and criminal justice from Old Dominion University and a master’s degree and Ph.D. in counseling psychology from Texas Woman’s University. I am also a licensed psychologist.

Why did you decide to work at UT Austin?

I have spent my entire career in higher education, so when I moved to Austin, I knew I wanted to be a part of the UT Austin community. Working at the University helping students navigate their career journeys for the last five years has been immensely fulfilling. I am thrilled to be able to serve as director of career engagement in the College of Education!

Why the College of Education and what is your favorite part about being part of COE?

Education students are talented, creative and compassionate. I have had the privilege of working with COE undergrads and grad students over the last five years at UT, so I am thrilled to be in this role and focus all my energy on helping COE students create meaningful and successful lives and careers.

If there are three words you would use to describe yourself, what are they and why?

Relational: I value and prioritize relationships with students, colleagues, friends and family. I am at my best when I truly connect with others.
Curious: I strive to understand people and help them find careers that will allow them to thrive. I love to research just about anything, including new careers, the intersection of career and wellness, and dog training tips for my new puppy, Princess Leia!
Authentic: I aspire to create spaces that value genuine interaction through honest communication, vulnerability and humor.

What impact do you hope to make for students in your new role?

I hope to empower students to create the lives they want to live, recognize their strengths, be connected to a network of employers who value them, and thrive in life and work. I want to be part of the community of support in the College of Education.
