Former Texas State Senator Florence Shapiro – a distinguished College of Education alumna (B.S. ’70, Secondary Education) and longtime champion of public education – was recently honored by Educate Texas for her lifetime of service. The organization also introduced the Senator Florence Education Advocate Award, celebrating her impact and unwavering commitment to schools and students across the state.
Earlier this year, the College of Education awarded Shapiro the Distinguished Career Award in recognition of her decades-long dedication to public education and her pivotal role in shaping education policy during her time in the Texas Legislature. Over more than 30 years of service, Shapiro has worked as a teacher, councilmember and as the first female and Jewish mayor of Plano.
She currently serves on the College of Education’s Advisory Council.
