Middle or High School Teacher

A diverse group of high school students collaborate on a project.

Most students who want to teach in middle and high schools will major in the subject they wish to teach.

The College of Education offers degrees for middle and high school teachers in Social Studies and English Language Arts through the University of Texas Urban Teachers. We partner with the colleges of Liberal Arts, Natural Sciences, and Fine Arts on all other secondary teacher preparation programs.

Students can take courses that may lead to a recommendation for certification for grades 4 – 8, or 7 – 12. Getting certified in 7 – 12 is more common and gives you the flexibility to teach in both middle and high schools.

Special Education teachers are certified by the Texas Education Agency to teach all grade levels (EC-12).

All future teachers must apply to and complete the Professional Development Sequence (PDS) a preparation program that involves education coursework, experience in schools, and student teaching.

University of Texas Urban Teachers

Typically paired with our major in Youth and Community Studies, the Urban Teachers program will help you develop the knowledge and skills needed to teach English Language Arts or Social Studies in linguistically and culturally diverse urban settings at the middle school or high school level.

This program also includes an internship at Breakthrough Central Texas that provides an in-depth experience in addition to school experiences and student teaching offered through the PDS.

Students who choose to not major in Youth and Community Studies may choose an approved subject area in the appropriate college and complete the professional development sequence through the University of Texas Urban Teachers program.
