Nora R. Garza, vice president for research development at Laredo Community College, has been selected to receive the Alfredo G. de los Santos, Jr. Distinguished Leadership in Higher Education Award. Garza earned her doctorate from what is now the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy’s Program in Higher Education Leadership at The University of Texas at Austin in 1994.
The award is named in honor of Alfredo G. de los Santos Jr., a founding board member of the American Association of Hispanics in Higher Education (AAHHE) and champion in higher education who also graduated from the Community College Leadership program. De los Santos was a role model for Garza while she was a student at the university.
“He represents that genuine individual whose education and experience guides us to forge ahead to make higher education a reality for more Americans. I am honored to be recognized and will continue to work to increase the number of Hispanics in higher education as students, faculty, and administrators.”
The AAHHE awards program was created to celebrate and recognize the work of Hispanic individuals in higher education. AAHHE is primarily focused on the need to develop Latino/a faculty and senior administrators, and serves as a leading research and advocacy group for Hispanic higher education issues.
