Our family impacts our developmental trajectory and outcomes to a far greater degree than most of us in this ruggedly individualistic culture care to admit. Consistent with family systems psychology, this talk challenges the dominant individual orientation in psychological research and practice. Carlson highlights research from the past 50 years that demonstrates the pervasive impact and importance of family relationships on human well-being, then challenges the state of the science in family research and practice, while illuminating a hopeful future.
