Professor Christopher Brown Discusses ‘Redshirting’ Kids in Kindergarten

Dr. Christopher Brown, a former preschool, kindergarten and first-grade teacher and now a professor in the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy, shared his thoughts and expertise on the topic of delaying a child’s start to kindergarten. In an article published with EducationWeek, Brown discussed a practice known as academic redshirting where young students are given an extra year to mature emotionally. Dr. Brown is the author of the book “Ready for Kindergarten? Free Yourself from the Readiness Trap so that You and Your Child Are Ready for and Will Succeed in Kindergarten,” as well as many other scholarly publications on the topic of early childhood education.
