Associate Professor of Language and Literacy Allison Skerrett has received the 2018 Dean’s Distinguished Teaching Award. The award recognizes a tenured faculty member in the College of Education who has compiled a distinguished record of teaching at the undergraduate or graduate level.
Skerrett is the director of the Urban Teachers program. She also currently serves as one of 10 International Council of Education Advisers, working with the Scottish government on issues related to education and inequity.
“The college is honored to recognize Dr. Skerrett for her exceptional work preparing teachers to recognize, value, and integrate the cultural and linguistic strengths of students in their urban classroom settings,” said Interim Dean Sherry Field.
Skerrett’s teaching and research focus on secondary English education in urban contexts, adolescent literacy practices in school and outside school contexts, transnational youths’ literacy practices and learning across transnational social and educational settings, and sociocultural influences on teaching and learning. Her course evaluations are consistently strong. Students speak to the rigor of her classes and her level of preparation, as well as her engagement with each of them. Skerrett has mentored many doctoral students through chairing dissertations and inviting them into research and writing projects.
